I'm suspecting a hardware / BIOS issue here, without any specifics to go on.

Could you post output from a native Linux boot of:

 - dmesg
 - dmidecode
 - cat /proc/ide/drivers
 - cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
 - BIOS vendor and version.

Is this laptop equipped with "ultra bays" or anything similar (see Thinkpad T42
for comparison)?

Can you take any action at the grub prompt?  Eg:  'cat /<tab>' may list a series
of filenames.  Note that the test CD is using a modified grub which searches
local writable media for a possible menu.lst file, and it could be getting
confused by your hardware.
