Done.

Is the long delay at the "gray screen" to be expected? could any of the
gplpv drivers output a message to warn about it? (I use /SOS and
/NOGUIBOOT to watch what's going on)

I have now upgraded to 0.9.11-pre4, my filesystems are not corrupted :-)

As expected the QEMU devices *are* hidden when the PV devices are
active, but not vice-versa.

The instructions don't mention the need to boot into non /GPLPV mode for
the upgrade, I certainly had to.

I found the XenShutdownMon service would not stop (in response to the
installer, or by me manually stopping it) so I had to set it to manual,
then reboot, then do the upgrade, then set it back to auto before the
reboot.

Disk performance seems improved, especially with larger transfer block
sizes, I'm seeing up to 50MB/s on either reads or writes, but if I do
mixed reads *and* writes the performance is really killed, ie. 5MB/s

Thanks for your efforts on these drivers.

Great idea. I didn't know I could implement bootloaders myself.
I merged my block-script with your bootloader-script and it works great.

I parses /boot/grub/menu.lst (inside the domUs-root-partition), reads
"kernel" and "ramdisk" path of the "default"-th entry in the configuration
list, copies those to the dom0, and returns appropiate paths to xen.
Last problem: The "exit 3" does not seem to work correctly. Whenever a
problem exists, xm create just hangs instead of stopping...

For anyone interested I have pasted it below.

Regards,
  Steffen

i have recently upgraded one of my xen servers from running ubunty
7.10 (gutsy) to ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)
to test xen 3.2 prior to upgrading the rest of the xen 3.1 servers.

my servers have 2 interfaces
eth0 is attached to the lan
eth1 is attached to the wan

on xen 3.1 to create the bridges for domUs i would run the following script

#!/bin/sh
dir=$(dirname "$0")
"$dir/network-bridge" "$@" vifnum=0 bridge=xenbr0 netdev=eth0
"$dir/network-bridge" "$@" vifnum=1 bridge=xenbr1 netdev=eth1

which created a seperate bridge interfaces
xenbr0 and xenbr1 apart from the eth0 and eth1

the domU was able to access the eth1 interface via xenbr1
even if the dom0s eth1 was not up.

but since switching to 3.2 i have heard the behavior has cahnged and
xenbr are no longer created
and that the interface name equals the bridge name. so i have
modified my script to the following

#!/bin/sh
dir=$(dirname "$0")
"$dir/network-bridge" "$@" vifnum=0 bridge=eth0 netdev=eth0
"$dir/network-bridge" "$@" vifnum=1 bridge=eth1 netdev=eth1

domUs have no problem accessing the LAN (eth0),
but i have been having lots of problems with the domUs accessing the WAN (eth1)

what i have come to realize is that since i don't set eth1 to up on
the dom0 (don't want to be able to access the xen server itself from
the WAN)
eth1 remains in the down state.

this wasn't a problem when the bridge interface was seperate,
but now that eth1 is the bridge interface as well as the eth1
interface for dom0,
i have to specifically call "ifconfig eth1 up" on boot to allow my
domUs to access eth1

is there some way to avoid this?

is there some way to have xenbr0 and xenbr1 seperate from eth0 and eth1?

TIA,
Tomoki Taniguchi

When that happens, I have to "xm destroy" the newly created domU :)

I believe that's because --output (/var/run/xend/boot/xenbl.3079 in my
example) is a pipe, and xen is simply waiting on that pipe. It doesn't
know that the bootloader has quit. Perhaps you can try feeding it with
an empty line, or perhaps some garbage like

linux (kernel /tmp/not_found)(ramdisk /tmp/not_found)(args "")

whose purpose is simply to tell xen it has finished. AFAIK, if xen can't
find the mentioned kernel/initrd it simply quits with an error message
anyway.

Regards,

Fajar

I think I did fix a delay (up to 30 or 60 seconds?) in the current hg
sources. I'll probably do a release sometime in the next few days as I
have save/restore working, although it's not well tested yet.

With your upgrade from 0.8.x to 0.9.x you certainly need to take every
precaution. Upgrades from now on should be a bit less painless though.

You can just go into task manager and kill the shutdownmon process. For
some reason stopping the service doesn't stop the process...

I'll watch out for 0.9.11 proper, The delay I see was long enough to
convince me it had hung.

I understand it was a bit knife&fork to upgrade from 0.8.x to 0.9.x
but I meant I had to switch to non /GPLPV mode for the 0.9.10 to
0.9.11-pre4 upgrade.

Because of the warning, or because it didn't work?

The installer ran, but none of the .sys files were updated to 0.9.10.4
versions, I hadn't imported your code-signing certificate at that stage,
I only did that when I tried again in non /GPLPV mode, that time the
upgrade worked.

I've been struggling with this for the last week. I'm trying to install
new helpdesk software that connects to an Oracle database on another
system. In all of the following instances I am able to run SQL Plus and
connect to Oracle.

1) Originally I had version 0.8.8 of the xenpv drivers, but the system
was loading without /gplpv switch. When running the helpdesk setup it
would take several tries just to get past the oracle authentication
step. Once I would get past it, then it would complain about various
other issues.

2) With the help of another thread, I was able to get 0.8.8 xen drivers
removed. I started the setup and was able to get by the login without a
problem. I shutdown the machine and backed up that instance of my img
file.

3) Next I installed 0.9.10 of the xen drivers. With these installed I
was able to get past the login on one shot. The setup continued as I
would expect. When it started doing the actual install, it bombed losing
connection to the database. I tried several times and it continues to
lose connection.

4) Down the machine and bring up the version with no xenpv drivers. Last
night, in step two I had no problems with the login. Trying again this
morning, I again can't get past the login, although I can login fine
with SQL Plus.

5) Went back to my XenPV 0.9.10 version of the machine. Installed
wireshark and captured communication to database server. Also ran a
continuous ping from dom0 to domU. Now the installation went without a
hitch.

I'm assuming the continuous ping made the difference, but it certainly
concerns me. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for determining what
the problem really is?

Thanks,
James

Andy,

After doing all this, do you end up with anything in Device Manager
showing up with yellow bangs?

Both of these show up as yellow bangs for me now:
Intel(R) 82371SB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

I do have the Xen net Device Driver, so networking works.

Thanks,
James

Sorry, just re-read your message. I assume those are the QEMU devices
that you mentioned!

Thanks,

I think if you're on 0.9.10 it is intended that the QEMU devices will be
visible rather than hidden by xenhide, but will show the yellow bangs
so the device isn't accessed by both drivers.

I've now upgraded to 0.9.11-pre4 and the xenhide does hide the QEMU
devices, so evrything looks "clean" in device manager, all hard
drive/cdrom/nic ar handled by PV drivers and console/fb/kbd are just
stub devices, but no yellow bangs or question marks.

Hi,

I did as mentioned above (used eth0) as my bridge but I am still
unable to ssh from my guest. I get :
[root@fedora_pristine driver]# ssh 128.105.104.102
ssh: connect to host 128.105.104.102 port 22: Network is unreachable

This is the relevant line from my cfg file:

vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3E:6F:CF:77, bridge=eth0' ]

Output of brctl show:
[root@adsl-02 images]# brctl show
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
eth0 8000.00e0815c75c2 no peth0
                                                        vif140.0
eth1 8000.0007e93907e5 no peth1

Please help.

Take a look at:
/dev/disk/by-uuid/

 &nbsp; &nbsp;Hi list,<br>
<br>
&nbsp; &nbsp;I&#39;m having troubles to get an iscsi initiator working on a domU.<br>
 &nbsp; &nbsp;As dom0 and domU I use a Centos 5 with the 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5<br>
 &nbsp; &nbsp;xen-kernel.<br>
 &nbsp; &nbsp;As iscsi initiator i use the iscsi-initiator-utils of the Centos5<br>

&nbsp; &nbsp; The problem is, that when I log in to my iscsi target on the domU<br>
 &nbsp; &nbsp;it is recognized as /dev/sda1.<br>
&nbsp; &nbsp; Now sda1 is also my root partition on the domU. And when I mount<br>
&nbsp; &nbsp;it I&#39;ve mounted the root partition and not the iscsi device.<br>

&nbsp; &nbsp;Has anyone had this problem yet? Is there a solution to make it<br>

Hi,<br>

Thanks for your response. I just tried it that way.<br>
Only problem is, that it creates a link that links to the same /dev/sda1.<br>
So if I mount the new /dev/iscsi_11 device it will mount again the root filesystem.<br>

James,

I just tried this on CentOS 5.2 with stock Xen (Xen 3.1.2-92.1.6.el5).
After installing the GPLPV drivers, Windows 2008 x32 just stays at the
loading screen.

When installing, I don't believe the cert was automatically installed so
I went through the warnings when installing drivers. I then installed
the cert manually by double clicking on it, and manually installed the
drivers in device manager.

I have tried reinstalling 0.9.10 with the same results.

Russ

Hi,

is there any possibility to get a XEN DomO and DomU running with
bridget and routed mode together.
The reason behind this is, to get the requests via the official IPs to
the DomU's (routed-mode) and the interworking
between the DomU's with connected with help of the (bridged-mode).

I got it work, with setting everything up manually. But as I
understood the "xen-config.sxp" can handle either routed or bridget,
but not both together. So is there're possibility or something what
can be done via the Xen-Tools.

Because after a restart everything needs to be set up again and that
not the way how it should be.
Many Thanks.

Cheers,
Maik

How long did you wait before thinking it had hung? On win2k3 I was being
impatient, give it a couple of minutes ...

Hi

I have a Athlon X2 6000+ 64bit, xen 3.2.1 64bit with about 1.0 - 1.5 GB
memory left. Dom0 is ubuntu hardy.
Other domUs are not cpu intensive. All domUs are linux paravirt with block
devices on LVM so far.

Now I want to try one of Windows 2003 R2 Server or Windows 2008 Server.
Can I expect Windows 2008 to run smoothly on this machine or should I step
back up 2003 ?

1. Can someone recommend me a link to a installation tutorial?

2. I only have network access to that machine, no physical access and there
is no X in the dom0. Will this be a problem?

3. Can I use LVM partitions for this?

4. Any other hint?

Regards,
  Steffen

Should - If you need the memory capabilities or your software requires it.
You don't have enough ram to exceed what a 32bit version of windows can all=
ot anyway.

Can - Yes.

Try it... I haven't checked whether or not your CPU supports running hvm's =
(I don't use amd).
The pdf I point you to below explains how to check.
I think it's a bit of a moving target currently as to whether or not it wor=
ks well. I believe
once the effort at pv drivers gets us to a stable first release it will run=
 very well.
I have a small commercial xen server running windows hvm's in production we=
ll.

> 1. Can someone recommend me a link to a installation tutorial?

PDF in the wiki.
http://www.xensource.com/files/xen_install_windows.pdf

> 2. I only have network access to that machine, no physical access and
> there is no X in the dom0. Will this be a problem?

Never even ran a Linux server with a gui yet, so I would say no :)

> 3. Can I use LVM partitions for this?

Yes, its how I do it just for the management capacity it provides.

> 4. Any other hint?

Just try it, and post back with questions as they arise.
