Can you try patched version od grub? Try first patch from message http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=419994;msg=15 or this: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=419994;msg=5 OK. Yes, I will try upgrading and patching grub. I am on a earlier etch version of grub - version 0.97-23 I see 0.97-27 is the release with Etch stable. I will upgrade to that and if I still have problems, apply those patches you mention. I will not be able to do this until Tuesday though. Thanks for your help Rafal.
