Thanks Ted. That helped me -- I figured it out it as mkdir /var/lib/xenstored 
and /var/run/xenstored (with the "d"s on the end) and that allowed my "xend 
start" command to occur without all the error messages and I can now xm list.

For anyone else reading this later, it's with FC4 and this entry in Grub (lines 
may wrap):

title Fedora Core (2.6.12-1.1447_FC4xen0)
        root (hd0,0)
        kernel /xen.gz dom0_mem=262144
        module /vmlinuz-2.6.12-1.1447_FC4xen0 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 
rhgb quiet
        module /initrd-2.6.12-1.1447_FC4xen0.img
