Ted, 

There exists a Xen Live CD at http://software.wordzoo.com/xencd/ that
is ~40MB, which should be downloadable over 56Kbps connection.   You
might be able to remaster it to suit your purposes.

Another suggestion would be to find a library or internet cafe in
Edmonton or Calgary or whereever the nearest large urban centre is and
borrow a highspeed connection there, start the files downloading to a
usb keychain, go for a coffee, and come back in 1/2 hr to 1 hr.
